Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from therapy?
There is no right or wrong way to do therapy. This is your space to receive thoughtful and intentional undivided attention judgement free. Whatever issue is important to you is worth listening to. We do not offer advice. Rather, we help you rediscover yourself and find the strength within to make the changes you want in your life.
What happens in the first session?
During the first session, you can expect to be welcomed with warm energy and a judgement-free zone. We first go over intake forms in addition to assessing for safety to ensure you are consenting and understanding our policies and what therapy services mean. After that, we typically engage in a fun activity to help us get to know each other and build that trust. We know that trusting someone can be difficult, and we want to make sure you feel safe with us. We will never pressure you to talk about anything you are not ready for. We go at your pace.
Where do we meet for therapy?
Currently our services are available online via HIPAA-compliant electronic health records platform, Simple Practice. You will create a client portal and receive a unique link every session. In order to join, you will need a dependable internet connection and a confidential space.
How long is a session and how often do we meet?
Standard sessions are 50 minutes long. Most people start weekly to build rapport, trust and comfort with their therapist and then can decrease in frequency as progress is made. Family and couples sessions can be up to 1 hour and frequency is determined by the need of the family. Our group sessions range from 1-2 hours and frequency varies per group.
What if I don't know what to talk about?
Believe it or not, this is a pretty common feeling. Your therapist will make sure to check-in frequently with open-ended questions about your current or recent stressors, goals and changes you would like to make. Your therapist will be prepared to help guide the conversation to ensure you are receiving what you want out of therapy.
Will everything I say be kept confidential?
It is our number one priority to keep your information confidential; however, there are some exceptions to the rule. If you tell us that you are having any thoughts of hurting or killing yourself, that someone is harming you, a minor or an adult over age 65, or that you have a plan, intention and means to harm someone else, we will have to break that confidentiality, but we will always keep you informed. Your therapist will review this with you throughout your time together.
Can I use my insurance?
The short answer is, no. Insurance companies require us to diagnose our clients in order to receive any kind of care. At Knoll Mental Health, we believe that you do not have to be at the point of wanting to hurt yourself to seek help. Without taking insurance, we are not burdened with the requirement of proving "medical necessity" to provide services that are helpful for everyone. We believe in taking a non-pathological and decolonized approach to therapy meaning we do not diagnose unless it is necessary or beneficial to our clients.
How much does therapy cost?
Our services range in price depending on clinician experience level. We are happy to provide sliding scale options to meet the needs of our community members if further assistance is needed.
